Help!!!! I need some great ideas.....

I wanted to pose this question to this amazing forum of creative people. This is my "easy bake" kitchen.

It is atrocious. It measures a whole whopping 8 ft. by 9½ ft. I am talking tiny, hence the name "easy bake". Well, we fully intend on extending the width from 8 ft. to at least 12 ft. However, that will not be happening right now or even in the next year. We have soooo many other projects, fencing being one of the biggies. We did not buy this place for the great house. We bought it for the location and the land. The view off my back porch is what I have always dreamed of and sitting out there in rockers with my hubby makes everything complete. (enough of the mushy stuff).......
Nevertheless, this room is truly driving me insane. It needs a temporary face lift to get us through to the permanent change. Here is where I would love your input, please!!!! I will tell you the things I love......
I love the ceramic tile floors and counter tops. I love the new black and stainless appliances. I even love, hard as it may be to imagine, the hardware on the cabinets. That is it.
Now tell me what changes you would make in here? This room connects to my newly painted living area. That door you see goes to my rather large laundry room, 8 ft. by 10 ft., go figure. I know the first thing is that that door needs to be painted but I am waiting until I know what I am doing in the rest of the kitchen. Would you paint the cabinets and what color? I love these.....

but I am not sure that my room is big enough for that color and what color would I do the wall. I literally mean 1 wall, as that is all there is to paint. LOL I want the room to still be light and airy, so it won't look any more like such a teeny tiny box.

Well, I am so eager to get some suggestions. Thank you all in advance, I so need the help and a starting point.

I went to rate my space... never been there before but I will go back, smile... I love that kitchen that you liked... I think you should paint your cabinets... It would bring a new ,fresh look to your room. I think I need to go back and look at your kitchen again... I will get back with you, smile... Susie h!

You know what might help too... Your fridge is black and just sticks out... If you want to keep it but want a new look. They make paint for them... I heard about this not long ago.. Maybe just paint that baby along with your oven and that door... You will be on your way for little $$$... Let me know what you think. Susie h~

I think it's a good thing that you like so many things about your kitchen! It seems like you just want some tweaking. I think you should paint the door to the laundry room with chalkboard paint. I would then paint that wall white to play up the cottage-y feel of the paneled wall. I know you like the cabinet pulls, but maybe something a little more streamlined or maybe if they were positioned a little differently, so it doesn't distract from the actual cabinet. I would also look into turning a couple of your upper cabinet doors into glass (I think you can just cut out the middle of your cabinet and have glass cut for it). That way, it would open it up a bit--you could put mirrors in the back like your HGTV inspiration room. Keep in mind, we can only suggest. It's your room; do what you love!

Hmmm... I am not sure what your look is yet since I'm still new to your blog. BUT I always have an opinion. LOL. I don't know why but I LOVE moss green in a kitchen with either your white or off white cabinets. Me I LOVE prim as you know so then I'd take a stain and wipe over them. I have the stainless look appliances and like them much better. I agree with the previous post of chalkboard paint on the door. Not sure how in depth you want to go so I didn't go too wild.... yet.

hey thanks for stopping by again. That flag is a close-up pic of the 4th of July cards I made. Have fun with the kitchen...I like your black appliances.

Hi! I think you could totally get by with painting your cabinets that green color on RMS. Also, I like the chalkboard paint idea on the door but I think it would really open up and elongate the kitchen if you had a french door there. If you had a window in your laundry area that would really brighten up the space. But definately go with that green color!! Love it!!

Either those walls or the cabinets need some paint! Or both. I would paint the kitchen a darker taupe (I'm partail to Valspar Laura Ashley Taupe 4) and paint the cabinets the green!!! I love them!!! If it is a "temporary" fix, then you might as well take a risk and fall in love with your kithen. I love the idea of taking off a few of your cabinet doors and stacking nice white plates in there. I would also look into replacing the lighting with something a little warmer. All that to be said, I've never re done a kitchen before, so what do I know?!

Hey girl!

If it were my kitchen, I'd paint the door white and cabs white or your green, move the cab hardware to the corners and put that cute wall paper up on the little bit of wall space you have and replace the florecent light with a chandlier.

You could SO paint the cabs that green like the kitchen you love!!!

I would consider moving the hardware to the corner unless you love it where it is. For me, hardware in the middle screams 1970 or 1960. You can putty the holes and paint over them.

You have great neutral floors and countertop--Yippie--that makes it so much easier!

Okay and LOVE what shannon said about the french door--1000 times yes!

Thank you all so much for the great suggestions..... This is like the most talented bunch ever!!! As for the door, the area is a tight fit with the refrigerator and the door that is there is a sliding door. So I think it would be hard to put a french door in.
Blessings~~~

P.S. Keep the ideas coming.

I love your floors and countertops as well! I might paint the walls that green color you like (the one of the cabinets on rate-my-space). But the first thing I would do is paint that wooden door white (does it connect to the garage?). And I loved what someone else suggested about painting a chalk board on it. I wouldnt paint a chalk board on the entire door, but would do a long rectangle in the middle surrounded by some thing white molding.

I think it's a cute little kitchen! But I feel your paint, as much as I love mine it can get really tiny.

Hi Trixi :)

How do you feel about taking the cabinet doors off on the top? It really opened up my kitchen, by just removing two of them. I agree with Shannon about the color and the door with glass to open it up :)

Good luck and have FUN :)

I agree with most everyone, paint the door white, but I'd suggest getting a piece of lightweight wood cut to fit a pretty frame and paint that wood insert with the chalkboard paint then frame it and hang it on the door. Then when you're tired of it, it's not permanent. Also, as others mentioned, you have been blessed with neutral colored countertops, so you can be a little bold in your colors, go for the green if you love it. Try doing just half the cabinets, say the bottom half in the green and the uppers in a nice cream color, maybe remove a few doors as suggested. Go for the wall paper on what wall space you do have or use some painters tape and mask it off to do your strips. I think you should definitely see what you can do with some paint, afterall this isn't going to be your forever kitchen so you might as well take the chance of falling in love with it while you await your big dog remodel. You have nothing to lose but stand to gain a knock your socks off kitchen. Trust your instincts!

I love the idea of doing them half green and half cream. I also like the idea of taking some doors down. The only issue is so little space for stuff.
Thank you again!!!

Oh honeybunny, you can totally paint the interim look that sweet green colour. Grab some of those sparkly crystal knobs at Target, I know they've got them. Your cabinet doors are perfect, perfect perfect for that look.

That stripey backsplash would be an easy to-do in an afternoon, too. You could even do it with a bit of wallpaper in a contrasting colour scheme, don't you think?

I saw recently a paint that gives appliances the stainless steel look. It was expensive at $100.00 for a small can but the lady at the paint store said it goes a long way and would do three appliances.

I'm so bad when it comes to paint color and especially for cabinets. But I would say a cute valance above the window would bring in color. my 2 cents. :-)

I love celery green.... not sure about that for your space as small as it is. Maybe a lighter shade would feel larger. I think the colors that you have are nice, too. I really love the yellow walls... of course, I have yellow walls with white cabinets in my own kitchen. :-) Can't wait to see what you come up with.

I had to come and see what everyone thought. First time visitor...fellow home school mom.:) I love the celery green. I painted our great room that color and at first was so afraid that is was too much...now it just makes me happy, happy, happy every time I walk in my house. Can't wait to see what you do.

I think you already got some great suggestions, I mean how can I compete with the nester? :) All I can say is that we painted out cabinets and I love them, it made a huge, huge difference. Everyone thought we were crazy since they were only 10 years old, well now they've all changed their minds. If your picky like me though, spray the doors then you wont have any brush marks. I really like the idea of putting glass in a couple of the doors like your picture. Good luck, I can't wait too see what you do.

Sorry, me again. I would definitely move the hardware too the side. We went to the automotive store and got some apoxy filler to fill ours, it worked good but you have to work fast. I saw it suggested on Danny Lipford (home improvement show) I love idea of a glass front door for your laundry room, that would look awesome. Ok, I'll leave you alone now. I did post about our painted cabs if you want to check it out. I'm really going now.

I like the color on the kitchen you chose from RMS. I acutally saw that one on there and it really caught my attention. I think since you have such a small space, you could totally pull off a detail like that to give your space some impact, some punch! I cant wait to see what you do! I have an easy bake kitchen too, so I totally feel for you!!

That inspiration kitchen is GAH-GEOUS! It even has the same molding as your cabinets--it was meant to be!

Okay, my two-cents:

Don't worry about the space being small and thinking you can't go darker. No amount of lightening is going to fool anyone that that space is bigger! :) Go dramatic and love it! You can always lighten things up with accessories and your trim. Going darker will also allow your dark appliances and countertop to flow more seamlessly.

I love the green cabinets--but I would go more sagey or olivey green than seafoamish green to coordinate with your tile. I love the idea of painting the upper cabinets lighter--but in your small space it might be better to keep all the cabinets the same color so that the overall effect isn't choppy or busy with two different cabinet colors, a wall color, appliance colors, and tile different, too.

I second what Nester says about the hardware. You can find cheap hardware that really makes a world of difference.

Have fun with your lighting, too!

Okay, looks like you have a lot of thinking to do with all these comments!

Thanks for stopping by my blog, too!

One more thought this time about that door... I saw this on a blog, in fact on a couple of blogs where they removed their pantry doors and had a pretty wooden screen door with lots of gingerbread brickabrac trim on it, any possibility you could do something like that? it would certainly open your space more... maybe that's just too country or too hokey or too too much but I just wanted to share it as I just remembered it, lol I can't wait to see what you do!

thank you for your comment! i appreciate anyone who's been or in the service. good luck with your kitchen...mines worse! it doesn't even have paint over the dark dark dark wood from 1970's and the counters are from back then too. waiting for my husband to come home on leave and we are going to tackle both the cabinets (with paint) and the counters!

I love that RMS kitchen, and I am in the midst of deciding what to do with my kitchen, too...come take a look-see if you get a chance, I posted about it last week.

I think black and green go well together, so you just might like your appliances after you paint the cupboards...and if they are in good shape, why buy new ones since you want to re-do the entire thing down the line anyhow.

I also have the storage dilemma you have...I want to take out some cupboards, but then where does all of that stuff go...kind of overwhelming...but I do know it will look so much more open and bigger...so I am thinking we are going to do it.

Best of luck, it's alot of work, but will be worth it :)

I'm looking again...I like your hardware, I even like the placement, it's charming...plus if you move it, you will have holes to plug up...not that it can't be done, but it's just more work to add to the list.

Is that a pocket door? We have one on our master bath...would love to paint it, but I know we cant get to the whole thing because it is stuck in the walls, lol. I guess I could try though...in fact, I bet that chalkboard paint would look cool in our bedroom, too, since the colors in the room are aqua, white and black...hmmm, something to think about....

I have soffits, too, like you do...someone (I think Layla) sent me to a blog where the lady had added beadboard to the soffits...and then another one added faux cupboard doors and pulls...to make the cupboards appear to go to the ceiling...does that make sense? I wish I still had the links, if I find them, I will definitely share them...or if you look at my kitchen post, maybe it is there in the comments.

I can't wait to see what you do :)

Just found your blog today and put it on my fav. list! Im sad to say we share the same kitchen..lol
We also share the same taste...I looked at the kitchen you had on there and LOVE IT TO PIECES!!! I think the color on the cabinets would looks fabulous. move the hardware to the corner so it looks more modern and up to date, paint the door white to freshen things up and you have a much newer look. I also ADORE the chandelier in the kitchen! I have being thinking and thinking and thinking about doing that in my little tiny kitchen and think Im going to just DO IT. What a statement. Good luck

Hi,

I would paint the door white, the walls a dark taupe and the cabinets a sage green instead of a brighter green. I would leave the hardware on the cabinets in the same location because repairing that many holes would be a major job! Then I would antique the hardware in a pretty finish. Have fun with this project, I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I went to rate my space and there were some great ideas. There was one that was titled budget kitchen remodel that reminded me of your space. The walls had a gold with black toile curtains.

I have two suggestions. I would choose to go with the same three colors in both. I think that the combination of white, black and a light green would be a great choice. I'd choose a little less saturated green that the RMS room since the space is small.
The first idea would require less painting. I think that it would be fun to go with a parisian look. Go to the fabric store and find a cotton material that has the three colors, but be careful not to get a print that's too busy. Then take off the hardware so that you can make a paper template of the space inside the moulding on the cabinets. Cut out the material and modge podge the material inside that middle "frame". The end result would look like your cabinets have picture frames filled with cute material. Then put the hardware back on in the original spot.
Then paint the wall and door white, and use the existing lines in the paneling to paint green stripes. I'd do this same wall treatment with both ideas.
The next idea would be to paint the cabinets the light green, bringing the color all the way up to the ceiling. Then bring in a few black accents, like maybe some iron work hung on the bulkhead above the cabinetry, so that your appliance colors look like an intentional choice.
And I agree with some of the other ladies on cutting the wood out of the inside molding and replacing it with glass.
Oh, and one more thing. Replace your lighting with some fun, sassy track lighting, cuz I think that anything that hangs down would probably get knocked around in a space that size.
That's my two cents worth---and it may not even be worth two cents to you. Good Luck!

Hi Trixi,

Check out this blog, the lady put blackboard paint on the soffit, I love that!

http://coconutsandlimes.blogspot.com/2008/08/artists-color-infused-mid-century.html

And I finally found the link for the beadboard on the soffit that Joy sent to me:

You might have to manually type in the web addresses, sometimes they get funky with you cut and paste them.

Keep me posted on your progress!
